**De Franse stad Saint-Malo maakt zich op voor het jaarlijkse literaire festival Etonnants Voyageurs (10-12 mei) met onder meer Olivier Adam, Tahar Ben Jelloun, François Bon, William Dalrymple, Amos Gitai, Jean Hatzfeld, Pierre Jourde, Colum McCann, Jean Rouaud, Michel Quint als geïnviteerden. Thema dit jaar is "migratie". Vaut le détour, zonder twijfel.

**Claude Lévi-Strauss bijna honderd jaar en vereerd met een dossier in Le Nouvel Observateur.
**Jonathan Franzen op het oorlogspad tegen Michiko Kakutani, belangrijkste maar ook meest gecontesteerde critica van The New York Times. “The reviews tend to be repetitive and tend to be so filled with error that they’re kind of unbearable to read, even the nice ones. The most upsetting thing nowadays is the feeling that there’s no one out there responding intelligently to the text. So few people are actually doing serious criticism. It’s so snarky, it’s so ad hominum, it’s so black and white. The stupidest person in New York City is currently the lead reviewer of fiction for the New York Times.”
**Late obit voor Hugo Claus in The Guardian. “For all his seemingly dark and despairing portrayals of Flemish life, however, Claus was a great believer in the human race, recognising everyone as interconnected and linked; accordingly, any evil or mean act of his figures affects the entire society. The betrayal of anyone is the betrayal of all.”
**Is Kuifje literatuur? De Britse romanschrijver Tom McCarthy vraagt het zich af in zijn boek Tintin and the Secret of Literature, besproken in The Los Angeles Times. “As soon as we ask if 'Tintin' should be treated as literature, we raise another question: what is literature?”
